Dog howling is a natural behavior for many dogs that can be caused by a number of reasons. Some of those reasons may be loneliness, excitement, or the want or need to communicate with other canines.

If you give your dog attention when he’s howling without being told “speak” it just lets them know that howling is a way to getting attention. If you ignore the attention-seeking howling, your dog will stop howling unless you tell him to.

is to act calm during times that your dog may think is exciting. When dinner time or walk time comes, act like you do over any other time of the day. If you get your dog worked up and excited, they are more prone to howl. If you sometimes try to get your dog in a frenzy, then sometimes you don’t, that will send a mixed message. Your dog will probably be more likely to howl if you send them a mixed message, in attempt to try to get you excited.
If you start to act calm every time, your behavior will influence your dog to act calmer. If your dog acts calm, they will be less likely to howl. If your dog does start to howl while you are preparing their dinner or getting them ready for a walk, stop what you are doing and wait for them to calm down.
Just like with a temper-tantrum with a child, if you show that their behavior is inappropriate and they will not get what they want when they act that way, they will eventually stop. Let your dog realize that fun things do not happen if they are hyperactive and howling, but only when they are calm, quiet, and behaving appropriately.
